Incoterms Compared for Oral Care Imports: EXW vs FOB vs CIF vs DDP

EXW, FOB, CIF and DDP shipping term cards laid out beside oral care cartons and a freight document on a light grey studio background

Your Incoterm Is a Cash-Flow Decision, Not a Shipping Detail

Most first-time importers treat the Incoterm as a line the supplier fills in. It is the clause that decides who books the truck, who carries the risk on the water, and how much cash leaves your account before you own anything.

Oral care cargo is bulky relative to its value, so freight is a real share of landed cost. Pick the wrong term and you inherit customs clearance before you have a broker, or pay origin charges you never budgeted. Confirm which Incoterms edition your contract references.

What Each Term Means for a First OEM Order

EXW looks cheapest because the supplier’s price stops at the factory gate. You then inherit export declaration, inland haulage and terminal handling. Without a consolidated agent in China, EXW usually costs more in coordination than it saves in price.

FOB is the default for a reason. Your supplier handles export clearance and delivery to port; your forwarder controls the ocean leg, so freight stays a separate, negotiable number. It also pairs cleanly with a FCL vs LCL decision.

CIF moves freight booking to the supplier — convenient but opaque, since freight sits inside the unit price. Insurance is also typically minimum cover only; specify full-value cover separately.

DDP is the lowest-effort route and the one most FBA sellers prefer, because cartons reach the fulfilment centre without you managing a broker. The trade-off is that duties and taxes are baked into one price, so confirm what the supplier assumes about classification. We cover that arithmetic in DDP shipping and landed cost.

How to Pick in Five Questions

  1. Do you have a licensed customs broker or import agent? If not, avoid EXW and lean towards DDP.
  2. Can you compare an ocean freight quote against the supplier’s CIF price? If yes, FOB is clearest.
  3. Is your HS code classification confirmed for the destination market? Under DDP an unconfirmed code is a risk delegated, not removed.
  4. Does your payment schedule release the balance before or after shipment? Align it with the term — see our payment terms guide.
  5. Are you shipping direct to a fulfilment centre? DDP removes the clearance step that most often delays a first FBA inbound.

Whichever term you choose, write the named place after it: “FOB” alone is not a delivery point, “FOB Ningbo” is. Build the term into your lead time plan too, rather than treating handover as the finish line.

FAQ

Which Incoterm should a first-time importer choose?
FOB if you have a freight forwarder you trust; DDP if you have neither a forwarder nor a broker. Both keep the export side with the supplier — the part you are least equipped to handle on order one.

Is EXW always the cheapest option?
The unit price is lowest, but you take on export formalities, inland transport and terminal charges. Without a China-side agent, EXW rarely produces the lowest landed cost.

Does CIF include import duties?
No. CIF covers cost, insurance and freight to the destination port. Import duties, taxes and clearance stay with the buyer.

Which documents change with the Incoterm?
The commercial set stays broadly the same, but who issues and holds them shifts. Check our supplier document set guide, then confirm requirements with your market’s customs authority.

Can I switch Incoterms between orders?
Yes — many buyers start with DDP to learn the lane, then move to FOB once volumes justify their own forwarder contract. Re-quote each time; freight is priced into the unit cost differently.
