MOQ vs MPQ vs SPQ: Decoding Factory Quantity Terms

Why One Quote Carries Three Quantity Numbers

A factory quote rarely arrives with a single number — it arrives with a production minimum, a carton count and an inner-pack count. Buyers who treat all three as the same kind of number either over-order or find at the warehouse that the shipment cannot be split. For importers, brand owners, Amazon/FBA sellers and distributors, knowing how MOQ, MPQ and SPQ differ is what turns a quote into a purchase order you can plan against.

MOQ: The Production Minimum

MOQ (minimum order quantity) is the smallest run a factory will put on a line. It exists because of changeover cost, not shipping cost: a tufting machine is re-threaded for a new filament colour, a filling line cleaned between formulations, a printing press set up for new artwork. Each is paid for either way.

MOQ is quoted per SKU and per variant — per colour, per hardness, per flavour. A four-colour range is four changeovers, not one. It is also the most negotiable of the three: it moves when you consolidate variants, take a stock component, or commit to a repeat schedule. Our low-MOQ supplier guide sets out the trade-off.

SPQ and MPQ: The Packing Constants

SPQ (standard pack quantity) is the number of retail units in one inner box — the unit your DC or 3PL picks from. MPQ (master pack quantity) is the number of units in one outer shipping carton.

Neither is a commercial minimum. Both are packing constants derived from carton dimensions, drop-test performance and pallet efficiency, so a factory cannot discount them the way it can discount MOQ — changing them means re-engineering the carton.

SPQInner box design, retail shelf handlingHow your DC picks and a store shelvesRigid per SKU; changing it means new inner-box tooling or printing

Where Buyers Get Caught Out

The three numbers interact, and the failure is usually arithmetic.

The multiple problem. If MOQ is not a whole multiple of MPQ, the factory rounds you up to the next full carton. Ask directly: is this MOQ a clean multiple of the master pack?

The split problem. FBA sellers and distributors often assume they can break a master carton across several fulfilment centres. You can — but you lose the transit protection the carton was engineered for, and some prep centres reject opened master packs. Settle the inbound plan before the carton spec locks.

The variant problem. MOQ per colour, multiplied across a six-SKU range, is a very different commitment from MOQ per style. Check the total against the payment terms you agreed, since deposits are usually calculated on the rounded quantity.

What to Confirm Before You Sign

  • MOQ per SKU and per variant, in writing.
  • Whether that MOQ is a clean multiple of the master pack.
  • SPQ and MPQ per SKU, with carton dimensions and gross weight.
  • Whether broken cartons may ship, and the effect on QC sign-off.
  • What happens to unit price if you later cut the pack quantity — see the toothbrush unit cost breakdown.

If the numbers are not on the proforma invoice, they are not agreed — our supplier negotiation playbook covers how to get them there. For freight, see FCL vs LCL for oral care and the DDP landed cost breakdown.

FAQ

Is MPQ negotiable?

Rarely on its own — it derives from carton engineering, not pricing. You can re-set it on a new tool or a large enough programme, but expect the carton to be re-quoted and re-tested.

Can I order below MOQ for a first test run?

Sometimes — usually as a trial order at a higher unit price, or by taking a stock component instead of a custom one. Ask for that price explicitly.

Does SPQ matter if I only sell online?

Yes. SPQ decides how your 3PL receives and picks stock and how well cartons survive the last mile. It matters less to the listing than to fulfilment cost per unit.

Why does the quote say MOQ per colour?

Each colour is a separate changeover, so consolidating colours is the fastest lever for cutting total order quantity.
