Toothbrush Handle Material Spec Sheet: Molding Specs Buyers Must Put in the RFQ
Why “PP handle, same as sample” is not a spec
Most RFQs describe the handle in one line: “PP handle, same as sample.” That line is why two factories quote the same brush far apart — they are not pricing the same part. One prices virgin polypropylene off a sample tool; the other prices recycled resin with a soft-grip overmold and a hardened production mould.
A handle spec sheet closes that gap. It turns “eco” or “soft grip” into measurable lines a factory can price, tool and repeat on every reorder.
The seven lines your handle spec sheet must carry
Send these as a table in the RFQ, not as prose. Ask the supplier to fill in your values before quoting.
| Spec line | What you must state | Why the factory needs it |
|---|---|---|
| Base resin & grade | Polymer type, grade, recycled content % | Drives unit cost, cycle time, green-claim paperwork |
| Grip / overmold | Whether there is a second shot, target softness (Shore A) | Two-shot molding changes tooling, cycle time and MOQ |
| Dimensions & tolerances | Length, neck section, head angle, ± tolerance | Decides mould steel, scrap rate and head fit |
| Shrinkage & warpage | Acceptable bow across a flat surface | Prevents handles that rock on shelf or mis-feed in packing |
| Colour & finish | Reference colour, gloss level, texture | Sets masterbatch or colour matching and mould polish |
| Decoration method | Pad print, hot stamp, laser or in-mould label | Some resins and finishes reject certain decoration |
| Transit & handling tests | Drop, bend, humidity-conditioning checks | Defines what “passed QC” means before the vessel sails |
Resin grade matters more than resin family. “PP” covers dozens of grades with different flow, stiffness and cost. If you want recycled content, name the target percentage and ask what documentation supports it, or you cannot defend the claim on the pack. If the sustainability choice is still open, work through our toothbrush handle materials guide, then lock the result here.
How material choice moves tooling, MOQ and lead time
Three lines in the spec move your commercial terms, not just the product:
- Second-shot grip. A soft overmold adds a material and usually a tooling stage: higher tooling, longer sampling. Require samples from the production tool, not a hand-finished prototype.
- Non-standard resins. Bio-based and recycled grades can run at different cycle times and scrap rates. Ask for cycle time per cavity — it is the hidden driver behind a quote that looks generous on resin price.
- Finish and decoration. High-gloss or textured surfaces raise mould polish cost and expose surface defects. Specify a matte finish up front; changing it after tooling is a rework bill.
Each shows up in your toothbrush unit cost breakdown — check the quote against it.
What to demand back before you approve a quote
Ask for four items and treat them as gate conditions:
- A material declaration for handle and overmold, naming grade and recycled content.
- Mould drawings showing cavity count and the shrinkage allowance used.
- A sample from the production tool, kept as your retained reference — pair it with the golden sample vs PP sample workflow so approvals do not drift.
- Written test results for the transit and handling checks you specified.
If a supplier will not put the handle spec in writing, the quote is an estimate, not a commitment.
FAQ
Do I need a new mould if I switch from virgin PP to recycled PP?
Usually not — recycled PP generally runs in the same tooling, though cycle time and surface consistency can shift. Confirm shrinkage and colour on a trial shot before committing to a full run.
Why do two factories quote different prices for the same “PP handle”?
Because the line is incomplete. Resin grade, cavity count, grip overmold, finish level and decoration method all hide inside that phrase. A completed spec sheet makes quotes comparable.
Can I change handle colour later without new tooling?
Colour is usually changed through masterbatch, but a new colour needs a fresh approval sample and possibly a colour-matching fee. Lock launch colours in the first RFQ to avoid a second sampling cycle.
Where do bristles fit in this document?
Same RFQ, separate section — filament material, diameter and firmness are specified independently of the handle. See our toothbrush bristle spec sheet.
Next step
Send us your handle spec sheet — even a rough one — and we will complete the missing lines and quote against it. Still at concept stage? Start from an existing tooled shape via our OEM service, or cover the gap with ready-to-ship stock while your first run is tooled. For pack formats that protect a soft-grip finish, see our private label oral care packaging guide.
