Retail-Ready Packaging Terms: PDQ, SRP, Master Carton, Pallet Pattern

Why Retail-Ready Packaging Is a Buying Specification

For an importer, brand owner or distributor supplying drugstores, supermarkets or club stores, packaging becomes a logistics specification. The retailer is not buying a box; it is buying the minutes an associate spends getting your unit onto a shelf, and the reliability of the scan at the till. Retail-ready packaging (RRP) — also called shelf-ready packaging (SRP) — is the group of formats that let a case go from pallet to shelf without being unpacked by hand.

Two consequences follow. The format is set by the retailer’s shelf and labour model, not your designer. And every RRP decision trades against freight: perforated fronts and tear-away lids add board, add volume, and raise cube per sellable unit. Our comparison of private label oral care packaging options covers format choice; this glossary covers the terms you will be asked to quote against.

The Four Terms Buyers Must Quote Against

TermWhat it isWho sets itCost consequence
PDQ display shipperA case that converts into the shelf or counter display — the outer is the merchandising unitRetailer or brand, at range reviewHighest packaging cost per unit; no separate fixture; wins secondary placement
SRP / RRP caseAny outer designed to go pallet to shelf without unpacking: tear-away lid, perforated face, trayRetailer operations specLess board than a PDQ; still more cube than a plain shipper
Master cartonThe outer case holding a stated number of retail units or inner packsCarton strength, drop test and pallet efficiencySets freight cost per unit and container fill
Pallet patternCartons per layer and layers per pallet on a stated footprintReceiving DC or 3PLDecides pallet stability, wrapped height and units per container

How the Four Stack in a Real Programme

A typical oral care line uses several at once: a PDQ for counter or power-wing placement, SRP master cartons for shelf replenishment, and a pallet pattern agreed with the receiving DC. The numbers move together — a PDQ carrying twelve units changes the master pack count, the layer pattern, and how many pallets a container holds.

That chain is why RRP belongs in the same conversation as quantity terms. As our MOQ vs MPQ vs SPQ guide sets out, the master pack is a packing constant rather than a commercial minimum: re-engineering an RRP case to hit a different shelf count means new tooling, new printing plates and a fresh drop test.

What to Confirm Before You Quote

  • Whether the retailer requires SRP, PDQ or a plain master carton for each SKU, in writing.
  • Pallet footprint and maximum wrapped height the DC accepts, and whether pallets ship single-tier or stacked.
  • Perforation and lid style, plus whether the planogram fixes units per facing.
  • Barcode placement and scannability on the converted unit; a PDQ often needs a second case-level code.
  • Carton dimensions and gross weight per SKU, so freight is quoted on real volume.
  • Whether the board grade survives your route; long sea transits and humid warehouses punish lightweight SRP.

Then hand the dieline to your OEM as a buildable file set — our private label packaging artwork checklist lists the files a factory needs before plates can be made. Tie sign-off to your QC inspection and payment terms so the RRP spec is evidenced before balance payment.

FAQ

Is PDQ the same as SRP?

No. SRP is the wider category — any case that reaches shelf without unpacking. A PDQ is one type of SRP: a display shipper designed to be the merchandising unit itself, usually for counter, end-cap or secondary placement.

Who decides the pallet pattern — factory or retailer?

The DC that receives the goods. Retailers publish a footprint, maximum height and stackability requirement; your factory engineers the carton to give a stable pattern within it. Confirm before carton tooling is cut.

Does retail-ready packaging always cost more per unit?

Board, print and assembly cost more per unit, but total cost often falls: you avoid separate fixtures, cut store labour and reduce out-of-stocks from slow replenishment. Compare landed cost per sellable unit — see the DDP landed cost breakdown.

Can one SKU ship RRP to retail and plain carton to Amazon?

Yes, but plan it as two pack specs. FBA prep requirements differ from a retailer SRP spec, and volume changes the FCL vs LCL decision for each.
